How often AI cites Quora

Each Quora page is built around one question, usually phrased in everyday language: "What is the difference between a freight forwarder and a customs broker?". That structure mirrors how people talk to AI assistants, so a Quora page can be a very close match for a prompt.

The answers are explanatory and personal. They mix experience, opinion and sometimes professional knowledge, with a credential line next to the author's name. Models reuse them as a perspective rather than as an authority, and usually pair them with more formal sources.

Quora also runs Poe, a service that gives access to several AI chatbots. That is a separate business: when ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity cite Quora, they cite its question pages, not Poe.

Quora fits intents that start with "why", "what is it like" or "how do people":

• "is it worth hiring a travel agent for a honeymoon"
• "how do small fashion brands get into department stores"
• "why are shipping costs from China so unpredictable"
• "which programming language should a beginner learn first"

Logistics, travel, fashion and gaming offer typical examples. Transactional questions ("price of", "buy", "near me") rarely lead to Quora, since an answer there lists neither offers nor addresses.

An assistant that searches the web live can only cite a Quora page if that page ranks for the query and if the answer text is accessible. Quora can ask visitors to log in after a few answers and mixes content with ads and related questions, which makes its pages harder to extract than a clean article.

Assistants grounded in a large search index, such as Gemini with Google Search, can surface a Quora thread whenever it ranks for the question. Grok, which searches the web as well as X, can do the same. ChatGPT search and Perplexity apply their own selection, which often lands on a forum or an editorial page covering the same question. Claude, which cites sparingly by default, seldom points to question-and-answer pages.

Age is another factor. Many Quora answers are several years old, and a model that checks dates may prefer a fresher source.

A modest citation rate does not mean that Quora has no influence. Its large archive of public answers has been part of web crawls for years, so its wording and opinions can shape what models say without any visible link.

Language is the second limit. Quora runs editions in French, German, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese, among others, but the English edition is much larger than the rest. Answers to questions asked in other languages therefore have fewer Quora pages to draw from.
