How are the industries defined?
Every question in the dataset is linked to a tracked business, and each business is placed in exactly one industry according to what it sells. A dental clinic goes to Healthcare, a booking software to Software, a roofing company to Construction. The classification is reviewed every month, as new businesses join the tracking.
The questions mirror what a potential customer might ask an AI about that market: "best roofer near Lyon", "which CRM for a small team", "is this food supplement safe". An industry page therefore answers a concrete question: when an AI talks about businesses like mine, which sources does it rely on?
Why do cited sources differ by industry?
Each sector has its own trusted references. Regulated fields such as healthcare, finance, insurance or legal services tend to lean on official and institutional sites. Local services (home services, restaurants, construction) usually bring review platforms and directories into the answers. Retail, fashion and electronics questions pull in marketplaces and product pages, while software questions favour comparison sites, documentation and communities.
That is how a platform with a modest overall average can weigh heavily in one sector. For GEO (Generative Engine Optimization, the effort to appear in AI answers), the lesson is simple: the sources worth working on depend on your industry, not on a universal ranking.
How to read an industry page
The number under each industry is the volume of answers analysed. Smaller industries rest on fewer answers, so their monthly values swing more; give more weight to the average and to long trends.
On each page, look at three things: the domains cited most, the balance between large platforms and specialised sites, and whether competitors' websites appear. Then compare with a neighbouring industry whose boundaries are close, such as Wellness and Healthcare or Construction and Home Services.
How to use this index
- Pick the industry that matches what your company sells, not the profile of its customers.
- List the platforms cited in your industry and check your presence on each: profile, reviews, listings.
- Compare with one neighbouring industry to spot the sources that are specific to yours.
- Revisit the page each month to see whether the mix of cited sources shifts.
Frequently asked questions
Which industry does my business belong to?
The one that matches what you sell. A company is classified by its own offer, not by its clients: an agency doing SEO for law firms belongs to Marketing, not Legal. If your business spans several activities, read the pages of each related industry, since AI answers about each activity may rely on different sources.
Why do some industries show few answers?
The volume depends on how many tracked businesses belong to the industry and how many questions are asked about them. Industries with fewer answers still give a useful picture of the dominant sources, but their month-to-month values are less stable, so the average over the whole period is the safer reading.
Do the industry pages name the companies behind the questions?
No. The pages show which websites and platforms AI assistants cite, as aggregated figures. The businesses whose questions feed the dataset are never named, and no individual answer is published, so the pages describe each market as a whole rather than any single company.
Method and sources
387'471 answers from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity, from August 2025 to September 2026, to the questions Sorank asks every week to follow its clients' visibility (88% of them in French). A citation is a source domain given in an answer; the rate is the number of citations per 100 answers. Data snapshot of 2 October 2026.
